Introduction
Today, we’re diving into a topic that resonates with everyone during the colder months—winter hair care! Winter may bring cozy vibes and cooler temperatures, but it also brings a host of challenges for our hair and scalp. From dryness and frizz to dandruff and breakage, the season’s effects on hair health can be frustrating, especially in a region like the UAE, where the fluctuating weather adds an extra layer of complexity.
In this interview with Dr. Shruti Kakar, Dermatologist, Vatika, we’ll explore the most common hair problems people face during winter and uncover expert tips to combat them.
1. What are the most common hair problems people face during the winter season?
Winter is tough on hair! Many people face hair-related issues due to dry, cool-air. As the humidity levels drop, the lack of moisture in the air can lead to dry, brittle hair and even cause split ends. The weather in the UAE is constantly changing , this can adversely impact hair health, causing heavy hair fall. People often experience these issues more if they have naturally dry or textured hair, as it tends to absorb moisture more easily in humid climates but struggles to retain it in drier weather.
2. How does cold weather impact hair and scalp health?
During winter, the cool air combined with low humidity levels causes the scalp to lose moisture. In colder months, the natural oils produced by our scalp are not enough to compensate for the dry environment. This can result in dry hair that lacks moisture and elasticity, causing frizz and a lackluster appearance. Without adequate moisture, the scalp becomes dry, itchy, and sometimes flaky, leading to dandruff or irritation.
3. What are your top three tips for maintaining healthy hair in the winter?
Maintaining healthy hair during the colder months in the UAE requires a combination of hydration, protection, and prevention.
Firstly, prioritize hydration. The dry, cool air can strip moisture from your hair, leading to dry and brittle hair. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the winter months. This will help in hydrating your body and hair from the inside out.
Second, when heading outside, wear a hat or scarf to shield your hair from harsh cold winds. Cold air can cause the hair cuticle to lift, resulting in frizz, split ends, and breakage. A silk or satin-lined hat is ideal, as it reduces friction and prevents further damage. If you prefer scarves, opt for soft, non-abrasive materials like silk or cotton to avoid roughening the hair cuticle.
Lastly, invest in a humidifier for your home. The cooler weather often brings drier air, which can sap moisture from your hair and scalp. A humidifier helps maintain optimal humidity levels, keeping your hair and scalp hydrated. This simple addition to your home can make a significant difference in preserving the health, shine, and resilience of your hair during the winter months.
4. Why does hair tend to become drier and frizzier in winter?
As the temperature drops, the air loses moisture, which impacts both the scalp and hair strands. When hair is exposed to dry conditions, it becomes more prone to frizz because the moisture in the hair begins to evaporate. Additionally, colder temperatures can reduce the scalp’s natural oil production, leaving hair dry and lifeless. In the UAE, the use of air conditioning even during the cooler months exacerbates this dryness, further damaging the hair.
5. What are some effective remedies for combating winter dryness in hair?
To combat winter dryness in hair, especially in the UAE’s dry winter climate, focusing on moisture retention is key. First, switching to a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner is essential. Products containing ingredients like argan oil, jojoba, or shea butter are excellent for adding hydration and sealing moisture into the hair. These ingredients help replenish the natural oils that may be stripped away by cold air.
Once a week, ensure that deep conditioning treatments are incorporated into your routine, as they are essential during the colder months to provide extra moisture and nourishment for your hair. Opt for treatments enriched with nourishing oils to help rejuvenate dry hair and restore softness. Another highly effective remedy is hot oil treatments. Coconut oil, olive oil, or avocado oil work wonderfully to deeply nourish your hair. Simply warm the oil, massage it into your scalp and hair, and leave it on for 30 minutes before washing. However, for some, applying oil directly to the hair can cause discomfort, such as headaches. If this is a concern, post-shower hot oil treatments are a great alternative. These can be applied after shampooing to provide nourishment without the sticky feeling or potential discomfort.
Lastly, avoid overwashing your hair, as this can strip it of its natural oils, leaving it more vulnerable to dryness. Try to wash your hair only 2-3 times a week to maintain its natural moisture balance and protect it from becoming dry and brittle.
6. Are there specific ingredients in hair care products that help reduce frizz during colder months?
Yes, specific ingredients can help reduce frizz during the cold months, especially in the UAE, where dry air can exacerbate frizz. Key ingredients to look for in hair care products include castor oil and argan oil, which nourish and smooth the hair cuticle, reducing frizz and adding shine. Additionally, it’s important to choose sulfate-free and paraben-free products, as these are gentler on your hair and scalp, preventing further dryness and damage.
7. How does winter weather affect scalp health?
Winter weather in the UAE can have a significant impact on scalp health. As the temperatures drop and the humidity decreases, the scalp loses moisture, which can lead to dryness and irritation. Without sufficient moisture, the scalp may start to itch, flake, or even become inflamed, which can lead to dandruff. In addition, the cold air can restrict blood flow to the scalp, which may negatively affect hair growth and overall scalp health.
8. What are some common scalp issues in winter, and how can they be treated?
Common scalp issues during the UAE winter include dryness, dandruff, and irritation. Dandruff is a common result of a dry scalp, as dead skin cells build up and flake off. To treat a dry scalp, regularly massaging the scalp with nourishing oils such as almond, coconut or olive oil can help restore moisture and soothe irritation. To maintain a healthy scalp in the winter months, it’s important to use a gentle, hydrating shampoo that doesn’t strip away natural oils. Avoid using hot water to wash hair, as it can make the scalp even drier.
9. How can you prevent hair breakage during the colder months?
Preventing hair breakage during the UAE’s winter requires a few essential steps to keep your hair hydrated and protected. Cold weather, combined with air conditioning, can make hair brittle and more prone to breakage. When hair is dry, it’s more likely to snap when styled or combed. To combat this, be gentle when drying your hair—avoid vigorous towel-drying, which can cause hair to snap. Instead, gently pat your hair dry with a microfiber towel to reduce friction and minimize damage.
Another important step is to limit the use of heat styling tools. Excessive use of blow dryers, straighteners, and curling irons can worsen breakage. If you must use heat styling tools, always apply a heat protectant spray beforehand to shield your hair from damage. Additionally, regular trims are also essential to maintaining healthy hair. Split ends can worsen in winter, so make sure to trim your hair every 6-8 weeks to keep it healthy and prevent further breakage.
10. What types of hair care products should be avoided in winter?
During the winter, it’s important to be mindful of the products you use, as they can impact the health and appearance of your hair. Here are a few types of products to avoid:
Sulfate-Based Shampoos
Sulfates are harsh cleansing agents that strip the hair of its natural oils, which can lead to dryness, frizz, and dullness, especially in the winter when hair is more prone to dryness. I recommend switching to sulfate-free shampoos that are gentle and help retain moisture. Look for products that contain natural oils, aloe vera, or other hydrating ingredients to keep your hair nourished.
Alcohol-Based Products
Hair products like gels, hairsprays, and mousse that contain alcohol can dry out your hair and scalp, which worsens frizz and breakage. Instead, opt for alcohol-free styling products. These offer the same hold and styling benefits without the drying effects. Hydrating gels or creams are great options for maintaining moisture while styling.
Overly Harsh Clarifying Shampoos
While clarifying shampoos are excellent for removing product buildup, frequent use during the winter can strip away essential moisture from your hair, leaving it dry and lifeless. It’s best to use clarifying shampoos sparingly, about once a month, and choose gentle formulas that also provide moisture. This way, you can still cleanse effectively without compromising hydration.
Excessive Use of Protein-Heavy Products
Protein treatments are great for strengthening hair, but overuse can leave it feeling brittle and prone to breakage, especially when paired with the dry winter air. To avoid this, balance protein treatments with deep conditioning and moisturizing products. Protein treatments should only be used as needed, while regular moisturizing products will help keep your hair hydrated and flexible.
High-Heat Hair Tools
High heat from blow dryers, flat irons, or curling irons can cause dryness, split ends, and breakage. Winter air already dries out the hair, so using excessive heat can worsen the damage. Always use a heat protectant before styling and opt for lower heat settings when possible. If you can, air-drying your hair or using heatless styling methods can reduce the risk of damage.
Strong Hold Hair Gels or Mousses
Strong hold products, like gels or mousses, often contain drying ingredients that can make your hair feel stiff and crunchy, which is particularly problematic in dry winter air. Instead of strong hold products, look for lightweight styling creams, serums, or gels that hydrate your hair while providing flexible hold. These products will help you maintain a natural, smooth look without the stiffness.
11. What are some winter hairstyles that can protect your hair from the elements?
One popular winter hairstyle is the braid, which helps secure the hair while minimizing friction that can cause breakage. Loose braids, such as a simple side braid or fishtail braid, protect hair from tangling, keeping it neat and reducing the risk of split ends. Another great option is the low bun or chignon, which is both stylish and practical. By securing your hair at the nape of your neck, you protect the ends from exposure to cold air. Using a silky or satin scrunchie further reduces friction, helping to prevent breakage.
Hairstyles with scarves are also a great option, as they provide an extra layer of protection from the environment. Wrapping a scarf around your hair not only adds a stylish touch but also shields it from the cold air, reducing exposure and potential damage.
12. How can diet impact hair health during the winter season?
Diet plays a big role in keeping your hair healthy, especially in the winter when your body’s nutritional needs change. To help your hair grow and stay moisturized, focus on protein-rich foods like lean meats, fish, eggs, and plant-based options such as nuts and seeds. These give your hair the amino acids it needs to stay strong and healthy.
Also, don’t forget about vitamins A and C. Foods like carrots, sweet potatoes, and eggs are great for your scalp and help with collagen production. Iron-rich foods like leafy greens, lentils, and beans help keep your hair follicles oxygenated, which can prevent thinning. Last and most importantly, staying hydrated and eating a nutrient-packed diet will help keep your hair nourished and strong all winter long.
13. What role does hydration play in maintaining healthy hair during the winter?
Hydration is one of the most important factors in maintaining healthy hair, especially during the winter months in the UAE. When your hair is properly hydrated, it retains its natural elasticity, reducing the likelihood of breakage or split ends. Hydrated hair also appears shinier, smoother, and more manageable, as moisture helps smooth the cuticle layer of each strand.
Though hydration is often overlooked when it comes to hair health, drinking plenty of water is essential for keeping your hair hydrated from the inside out. Winter weather can dehydrate your skin and hair, so you need to replenish lost moisture by staying hydrated. Aim to drink at least 8 cups of water a day and include hydrating foods such as watermelon, cucumbers, and citrus fruits to further boost hydration.
14. How can stress impact hair health during the winter season?
Stress can significantly impact hair health, particularly during the winter months when the body is already adjusting to environmental changes. Shorter days, lack of sunlight, and cold temperatures can amplify stress, contributing to seasonal affective disorder (SAD), which increases cortisol levels. Elevated cortisol levels can disrupt the normal hair growth cycle, leading to hair shedding, thinning, and even hair loss.
During winter, hair may already be more brittle and prone to dryness due to cold weather and indoor heating, making it more susceptible to breakage. Dry indoor air, combined with the stress response, weakens the hair shaft, leading to split ends, dryness, and increased breakage.
In the UAE, these conditions are intensified by the dry air, which further exacerbates stress-related hair issues. To minimize the impact of stress, adopt stress-reducing practices like meditation, yoga, or regular exercise. Prioritizing self-care, including relaxing hair treatments, can help soothe both the scalp and mind, promoting healthier hair growth.
15. What are the most effective hair treatments for the winter months in the UAE?
In the UAE’s dry winter, deep moisture treatments are essential to maintain healthy hair. Hydrating hair masks, enriched with oils like argan, coconut, or olive, penetrate the hair shaft to restore moisture and boost shine. For long-lasting hydration, leave-in conditioners provide lightweight moisture without weighing hair down. For intensive moisture retention, slugging, a treatment where you apply thick oils or creams overnight, seals in hydration, helping restore dry hair while you sleep.
Hot oil therapy is particularly effective in winter, as the warmth opens the hair cuticle, allowing oils to deeply nourish and repair. Regular hot oil treatments, combined with a soothing hair spa experience, provide an extra layer of hydration, leaving the hair soft and revitalized.
In addition to hair treatments, scalp care is crucial. Oils like tea tree or peppermint oil can soothe dry, flaky scalps while encouraging healthy hair growth. Overnight masks offer intense hydration, fully absorbing into the hair for deep nourishment. Lastly, using sulfate-free shampoos or those for sensitive scalps helps protect the natural oils that shield your hair from dryness and irritation.
