It is a playful tradition handed down across generations, and on Sunday the Malaysia Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai flew hundreds of butterfly kites at Al Forsan Park.
Michelle Lau Sook Yee, Malaysia Pavilion Director, explained that this has been done at the end of every month since the start of Expo 2020 to “connect people and spread the love, which is what the global event is all about”.
“We wanted to share our traditions here [at Expo]. To my understanding, a lot of people have never flown a kite before. This is really a good pastime [and opportunity to learn] new skills for families and children,” she added.
“At the same time, we want to inspire visitors to the Expo to be more sustainable. Our pavilion is proudly net zero carbon – as an example of our sustainability commitments for Expo 2020 Dubai. We want to imprint the importance of sustainability on the minds of our visitors and event participants.”
The activity promotes the biodiversity of the country’s rainforest and features the country’s national butterfly – the Rajah Brooke. It is also part of Malaysia’s brand campaign – the #MyButterflyEffect – which aims to create a “butterfly effect of green growth ideas”.
