Pakistani band Khumaariyan put traditional instrument the rubab at the centre of their performance tonight (29 January) at Expo 2020 Dubai.
The stringed instrument, which dates from the seventh century, was an integral part of a show that had the audience at Dubai Millennium Amphitheatre on their feet and dancing from the off.
The quartet provided an hour of rhythmic, lively music, also making use of guitars and drums with occasional fragments of vocals thrown in to complement the beats, combining covers of international songs, such as the Game of Thrones theme tune, with traditional Pashtun music.
The band describe themselves as “eating, sleeping, and living music” – and their enjoyment at playing at Expo 2020 Dubai was clear to see.
