UBAI, 16 January 2022 – Amina J Mohammed, Deputy Secretary General, United Nations officially opened the Sustainability Portal at Expo 2020 Dubai on Sunday as Global Goals Week got underway.
On Saturday, Mohammed addressed delegates and visitors at Al Wasl dome, giving an impassioned speech highlighting the need for collective action to meet the 17 Sustainable Development Goals – a blueprint for people, planet and prosperity .
Mohammed said: “It is up to each and every one of us, individually and collectively, to turn this engagement into partnerships and investments that tangibly improve people’s lives everywhere. With the Global Goals woven into the fabric of Expo 2020, I cannot think of a more appropriate place for us to renew our shared commitment to keep the promises that we made in 2015.”
Running from 15-22 January, Global Goals Week aims to raise awareness of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and marks the first time that the event has been hosted outside the UN General Assembly in New York.
The Week provides a platform for world leaders and policy-makers, business leaders and citizens, to work towards achieving the 17 SDGs, which aim to reduce poverty and inequality, empower women and girls, and address the pressing issues around climate change to achieve a peaceful and prosperous world by 2030.
