DUBAI, 9 January 2022 – A slice of Malaysia was brought to Expo’s Jubilee Stage on Sunday when the pavilion presented the ‘Malaysia Truly Asia’ evening showcase, with mesmerising dance and music performances by some of the country’s best-known singers, music groups, and musicians.
Continuing the celebrations from Saturday’s Malaysia National Day at Expo, the mood was set by Miss Universe Malaysia 2020, Francisca Luhong James, the first indigenous contestant in the beauty pageant.
James said: “Malaysia is a place full of culture, and tradition and heritage. Usually when people come to Malaysia, they know that the races we have are Malay, Indian and Chinese, but where I come from, I’m surrounded by different ethnicities and races. When I came here, I visited many pavilions. This is one of the best ways to share the culture and heritage of the world.”
Songs from Malaysian music legend Zainal Abidin, known for his trademark fusion of multi-ethnic sounds, struck a chord with the audience as Abidin – one of the most famous Malaysian singers globally – impressed with his versatility, emotion-charged voice, and friendly interaction.
Another Malaysian legend, Syafinaz, who sings in Italian, Spanish, German, English and Malay, charmed fans with her stunning soprano voice, with many in the audience joining in the singing.
There were several breathtaking dance performances, including the surya (sun) dance by the Sutra Foundation, directed by renowned choreographer Ramli Ibrahim, while drumming group Hands Percussion, established more than 20 years ago, delighted the audience with its spellbinding sounds.
The dance show ‘Malaysia Truly Asia,’ presented by the Istana Budaya Theatre Group, showcased the cultural diversity of Malaysia.
